Little dying

Odd that two such dissimilar things as sleep and orgasm should both, at various times, been called 'the little death'. 'The little depression' perhaps better describes the former; and for the latter I'm puzzled at the desire to belittle it in the first place ...

I don't think it's really belittling. What is not smaller than death?

The metaphor seems pretty obvious: a conclusion; the ending of a story; the cessation of struggle.

Your question may be rhetorical, Richard, but in case it isn't, Ted Hughes has an answer for you.

Thanks, Adam!

The question was rhetorical but I don't mind the answer. The poem is great. Maybe I will put it on my myspace. That Ted Hughes sure is one cool cat.
